Turkish Data Protection Authority Publishes Annual Report 2024

The 2024 Annual Report (“Report”) prepared by the Turkish Data Protection Authority (“Authority”) has been published on the official website of the Authority.

According to the Report;

  • ​In 2024 a total of 8.275 complaints and notices were submitted to the Authority. This represents an approximate 11–12% decrease compared to the previous year.
  • The service sector ranks first in the number of applications, with 1.624 submissions. A nearly twofold increase has been observed in applications submitted within the legal services sector.
  • A significant portion of the applications concerns the unlawful processing of personal data and its sharing with third parties. In addition the unauthorized sending of commercial electronic messages is among the prominent types of violations.
  • In 2024 the Authority imposed a total of TRY 552.188.101 in administrative fines. The vast majority of these sanctions were issued due to non-compliance with the obligation to register with the Data Controllers’ Registry.
  • There was a decrease in data breach notifications compared to the previous year. A total of 289 data breach notifications were submitted to the Authority in 2024.
  • Within the scope of cross-border data transfers, 76 out of 90 undertakings submitted to the Authority were rejected. In addition 1.364 standard contract notifications were submitted in 2024.
