Keeping Information About Your Child Safe: Back-to-School Photos

As September approaches, social media is flooded with photos of smiling children celebrating their return to school with school bags in hand.

Sharing photos can sometimes result in unintended oversharing of personal information, which can have severe consequences in the wrong hands. To avoid these serious consequences, see the following 4 recommendations from the Data Protection Commission (‘DPC’) :

  1. Don’t overshare

If you’re going to post a photo, keep it simple. Don’t add any additional information that might identify your child and where they go to school.

  1. Make sure that you do not include the child's personal information in the background.

Always check what is in the background. Blur out school crest on uniforms or the house number on your front door, and turn off location data. Do not forget that some information that may seem insignificant can be important when it comes together.

  1. Talk to your kids

Photos of your kids are their personal data. If they’re not happy for you to post online, don’t do it. Consider sharing the photo with family or friends in a private messaging group or by email instead.

  1. Who do I want seeing this photo?

Set your profile to ‘private’. Check that your friends list only includes people you actually know and are comfortable with seeing this information.
