“New Measures to Strengthen Cybersecurity Resilience and Capabilities” Published by the European Commission
On 20 January 2026, a public announcement titled “New Measures to Strengthen Cybersecurity Resilience and Capabilities” was released on the official website of the European Commission.
The European Commission has proposed new cybersecurity measures aimed at enhancing the EU’s resilience and capabilities. A key element of these proposals is the revision of the 2019 Cybersecurity Act, which establishes the framework for EU-wide cybersecurity certification of digital products, services and processes.
The proposed revision aims to:
- Strengthen the security of the EU’s information and communication technology supply chains by reducing risks associated with third-country suppliers that raise cybersecurity concerns,
- Ensure that digital products and services used by EU citizens are tested more efficiently for cybersecurity, by clarifying rules and simplifying procedures under the European Cybersecurity Certification Framework.
Beyond the revision of the Cybersecurity Act, the proposed measures also seek to:
- Facilitate compliance with cybersecurity obligations by simplifying jurisdictional rules and streamlining the collection of data on ransomware attacks,
- Reinforce the role of the EU Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) to better support Member States in understanding, preparing for and responding to common cybersecurity threats.
The proposals will be discussed by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. Following their adoption, they will be implemented across the European Union.
