08.09.2020
The European Data Protection Supervisor (“EDPS”) published a new blog post named “Artificial Intelligence, data and our values – on the path to the EU’s digital future” on its website on 7 September 2020.
With the Coronavirus crisis, the data security problem has revealed and artificial intelligence is an important part of this problem. In this blog post, it is mentioned that artificial intelligence is not a harmless and magical medicine that heals everything, and that the advantages, costs and risks should be taken into account by everyone who adopts a technology, especially by public administrations that process great amounts of personal data.
According to the EDPS, the data security is a part of the solution, not a problem ensuring data security also depends on data spaces remaining true to European values. Therefore, the EDPS aims to provide a European approach that stays true to its values in its strategies on Artificial Intelligence. Also, the EDPS says it is ready to advise the Commission and EU legislator on how to ensure that technological leadership does not come at the expense of undermining fundamental rights and freedoms.
