Swedish Supervisory Authority Imposes Administrative Fine on Equality Ombudsman Due to Personal Data Breach

On 23 April 2025, the Swedish Supervisory Authority (SA) has imposed an administrative fine on the Equality Ombudsman (DO) due to a personal data breach concerning the website managed by DO.

According to the decision :

A security measure has been implemented by the DO to prevent personal data from being included in website usage analyses. However, it has been determined that the measure has not functioned as intended, and some data have been inadvertently shared with the data processor conducting the analyses.

It has been determined that approximately 500 tips and complaints were affected by the data processing breach, which lasted for approximately one year.

After the incorrect processing of data was discovered, it was reported that the online form had been closed.

It has been concluded that adequate and effective measures have not been implemented to ensure the protection of personal data in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR); therefore, an administrative fine of SEK 100,000 (approximately EUR 9,000) has been imposed on the DO.
