ICO Issues an Important Warning to the UK's Leading Websites to Make Cookie Changes
On 21.11.2023, the Information Commissioner’s Office (“ICO”) warned some of the UK's leading websites that they will face sanctions if they do not make changes to comply with data protection law, according to the official website.
Accordingly;
- Some websites do not give users reasonable facilities and choices about whether or not to be tracked for personalised advertising.
- Moreover, the ICO has previously issued clear guidance that organisations should make it as easy for users to "Decline All" advertising cookies as it is to "Accept All". Accordingly, when users decline all tracking, websites can still display adverts, but should not tailor them to the individual browsing.
- They have sent a letter to companies that operate the UK's most visited websites stating this and giving them 30 days to ensure that their websites comply with the law.
The ICO will provide a detailed update on this work in January.
