EDPB Publishes 2024 Annual Activity Report

The 2024 Annual Activity Report (“Report”) prepared by the European Data Protection Board (“EDPB”) was published on the EDPB’s official website on 23 April 2025.

According to the Report;

  • The 2024–2027 strategy has been adopted by the EDPB to enhance the effective implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”), ensure consistency across Europe and adapt to emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
  • Eight consistency opinions have been adopted under Article 64(2) of the GDPR. These opinions have addressed a number of current and significant matters, including:
    • The implementation of “consent or pay” models by large online platforms
    • The deployment of facial recognition systems at airports
    • The processing of personal data for the purpose of training artificial intelligence models
  • Four new guidelines have been published by the EDPB to assist organisations in ensuring GDPR compliance, particularly regarding processing based on legitimate interest and the transfer of personal data to third-country authorities.
  • Active contributions have been made by the EDPB to legislative processes. For instance, opinions have been issued on the draft procedural regulation concerning the enforcement of the GDPR and on the role of data protection authorities within the framework of the Artificial Intelligence Act.
  • New digital legislations, such as the Digital Markets Act, the Digital Services Act, the Artificial Intelligence Act, the Data Governance Act, and the Data Act, have been designed in alignment with the GDPR. In order to ensure their consistent implementation alongside the GDPR, cooperation has been strengthened by the EDPB with bodies such as the European Union Artificial Intelligence Office and the High-Level Group on the Digital Markets Act.
  • To improve the accessibility of the GDPR for a wider audience, the Data Protection Guide for Small Businesses has been published in 18 languages.
