A Public Announcement Regarding Uber Technologies Inc Data Breach Notification was Published by the Personal Data Protection Authority

The public notice published on the website of the Personal Data Protection Authority (“The Authority") announced that Uber Technologies Inc. had suffered a data breach.

The said data breach was notified to the Authority by the data controller under the notification obligation pursuant to paragraph (5) of Article 12 entitled "Obligations Regarding Data Security" of the Personal Data Protection Law No. 6698. 

The data breach notification summarises;

  • That the data controller had received an email on 2 July 2024 from an individual indicating an intention to make publicly available personal data that may have originated from Uber,
  • It has not yet been determined when the data breach occurred and the source of the breach, and the investigation is ongoing,
  • Uber users (passengers and/or people ordering food) and/or drivers and/or people making deliveries are affected by the breach,
  • With respect to the data affected by the breach:
  1. It is understood that the screenshots of Uber users' data (passengers and/or food orderers) include name, email address, phone number, profile photo, registration date and rating information,
  2. With respect to drivers and/or delivery personnel on the Uber platform, the data likely to be affected by the breach are those within the scope of documents such as driving licence, insurance, identity card, vehicle registration and due diligence checks in the screenshots, but the exact personal data affected is not known at this time,
  • The number of people affected by the breach has not yet been determined.

It has been disclosed.

Although the investigation into the matter is ongoing, with the decision of the Personal Data Protection Board dated 10.07.2024 and number 2024/1161, it has been decided to publish the notification of the data breach on The Authority's website.
