The Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection Imposes Administrative Fines on Klarna Bank

The Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (“IMY”) held an inquiry against Klarna Bank (“Klarna/ the Company”) which processes people’s data in many various ways. According to the investigation, Klarna did not provide any information regarding the purpose and the legal basis of personal data processing. Moreover, the Company did not clarify where and how individuals can obtain information about their transferred personal data. Individuals also were informed incompletely in respect of the personal data subject rights such as the right to delete data, and the right to object to how one’s personal data is processed. Additionally, the Company provided incomplete and misleading information about who were the recipients of shared personal data.  

In consequence of these considerable infringements, IMY decided to impose an administrative fine against Klarna approximately EUR 724.000 due to all of the infringements and deficiencies.
