ITALIAN DPA ASKS FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM TO PROVIDE INFORMATION ON MINORS' SUBSCRIPTION
2.02.2021
Following the case of a 10-year-old girl from Palermo and the processing restrictions placed on TikTok, The Garante (Italian data protection authority) has asked Facebook and Instagram for clarification on how easy young people can access other social networks in the wake of the girl's death in Palermo.
The Garante asked Instagram-owned Facebook to provide details including how many and which accounts were kept by the girl and, if so, how a 10-year-old girl could be able to register with both platforms.
In addition, the Garante inquired about age checks used by the platforms to check that the users comply with the minimum age for registration.
Facebook, which also owns Instagram, has 15 days to respond to Italy.
According to the Authority, investigations would also be extended to other social networks "in particular with regard to the methods of access to the platforms by minors."
